Week Commencing 24/05/10

24/05/10:-
Today we spent the first lesson checking over our captured footage, covering our questions for game station and scheduling for the week. We then went and filmed an interview with gamestation; to give us someone with more knowledge on the retail side of the consoles. We also filmed and checked out the deals that were offered in stores. Then in the afternoon, we captured some of the footage and worked on the freelance portfolio.

25/05/10:-
Today has been spent filming the missing scenes for our production, we have done the console breakdown looking at the features of each console and the comparison. We have also recorded cutaways of the consoles to backup our points. I have then moved onto sorting out my production file. We also finished the final conclusion scenes for our production.

26/05/10:-
Today editing has been the main focus, we have put together the bulk of the show and we are checking to make sure it flows correctly and ensuring we have everything we need. As well as this I have been putting the finishing touches to my freelance portfolio.

27/05/10:-
Today has been the busiest day; I have printed out my research and work for my individual folder. I then printed out my work for the group folder. I also did a sound edit for our product; this meant changing the levels when the volume wasnt balanced using keyframes. I also added music to match the atmosphere of the scenes. I then put together our group folders and wrote up my evaluation. We tried burning a copy of our work off but the sound edit wouldnt send back to final cut and then the disk wouldnt burn.
In the end I imported the sound file back into final cut and then synced it with our video tht was already on there. I then burnt a fresh copy of our work with the full sound edit.

Week Commencing 17/05/10

17/05/10:-
today we spent the morning testing out the different effects we could use to give our footage a retro feeling. Me and alex then discussed what footage could be used and then we checked over the script to make sure it was well writeen and explained everything that needed to be. We then worked some more on our freelance portfolios.

18/05/10:-
Today we were meant to film an interview at gamestation, however because of miscommunication between the manager and workers they did not know about the interview and have asked us to return next monday at 11. We then filmed some transient scenes out and about in stratford, using a nice happy feeling setting by the river and then contrasting it with an alleyway.

19/05/10:-
Today I spent the day catching up on my research. I found out some deals and facts and figures on the XBox and PS3. I then added to my freelance portfolio. I also worked on my genre essay.

20/05/10:-
Today we ripped the game footage onto alex's laptop and then encoded it into a different format so that we could have decent quality footage and sound. We then filmed two scenes at beth's house.

21/05/10:-
Today we started with website lesson. Then after this I spent my mid morning catching up on my production file making sure I have all my pre-production documents and files. Then in the afternoon we had to re-shoot some scenes due to the fact the sound was ruined by reverb because of the alleyways acoustics.

Week Commencing 10/05/10

10/05/10:-
Today I carried on with my pre-production work, making sure the risk assesments and health and safety forms were all filled in for each location. I also started writing up questions for the interview we were holding. I also assisted finding contact details for codemasters and gamestation. We then progressed to working on our freelance portfolios I looked into working as a lighting technician in the media industry. I also attempted to film some vox pops with alex, finding out what people thought about our documentary.

11/05/10:-
Today as a group we went into stratford and filmed some vox pops. By using beth as our lead interviewer, we had her approach people because as a group of lads it is rather intimadating. We spoke to people who believed didnt conform to the typical stereotype thats associated with gamers. We looked at these people because we thought it would help widen our audience appeal. We then looked at cinematography and framing of interviews and shots.

12/05/10:-
Today me, alex, ben and mat went to alex's house and recorded footage for our documentary. We filmed the introduction; we added mise-en-scene in the background to make him look like a gamer, we adjusted the lighting use home lamps and positioned him similiarly to Charlie Brooker. For this I was directing and operating sound. We then recorded game footage using a dvd recorder plugged directly into the console and the tv. We also recorded reactions to the games, for when he is comparing the two consoles and their exclusive games. Also we recorded mats introduction to the xbox.

13/05/10:-
Today I sat with alex whilst he captured the footage from his house, however due to the fact we had used his dvd recorder, it would not work with the colleges DVD recorder therefore we had to wait until alex could bring his own dvd recorder. We also looked at the introduction and other scenes from alex's house and realised that we had some issues with the shots:- for example I dropped the boom pole into shot and sometimes stood in shot.

14/05/10:-
Today we spent the begining of the day scheduling the rest of our assignment time. We then spent the afternoon making sure all pre-production was covered. We also discussed what we could do because we were still waiting for contact from Codemasters; which is a big part of our documentary because they were meant to be giving us their opinion from the point of a games developer.

Thursday 20 May 2010

Week Commencing 3/5/10

03/05/10:-
Bank holiday monday; today my reseach time was restriced due to the fact I was at work. However when I got home I was able to rehearse my own section of the pitch and make sure the issues and reasons were fully explained and related to our pitch.

04/05/10:-
Re-pitch: Our idea has been commisioned; although we did have a few problems:- some areas that werent relevant were still left in our presentation. However we had re-hearsed well, but we hadn't took notice of our style very well - they believed we had a similiar style to the gadget show but we had looked at Charlie Brooker for style. We then agreed to come into college the next day to get on with work.

05/05/10:-
Today was our first attempt to capture game footage from PS3 and XBox 360 straight into final cut pro. However when we attempted it we had no input coming through into final cut pro. We started discussing ways in which we could work around this. We decided to attempt to do it using a DVD recorder linked to the console and then link this up to the TV.

06/05/10:-
Today we started breaking down all of the areas of pre-production; I was given - treatment and health and safety/risk assesment. So I updated the treatment and started writing up the health and safety forms ready for productions for each location we were working at.

07/05/10:-
Today was spent discussing contacts and continuing with pre-production. We also carried on looking at style. I looked at the gadget show and started noting down which sections I wanted to imitate.

Week Commencing 26/4/10

26/04/10:-
Day before the pitch; today we have spent the day preparing everything we need for our pitch; handouts, presentation style and our notes. I have updated my research and added a new section listing the resources we will need to produce our documentary. I also created our treatment outlining the different aspects of our production. We re-hearsed our presentation to make sure we knew what we were talking about.

27/04/10:-
Pitch Day; today we went into our pitch fairly confident, we thought we were well prepared and had covered each area of our presentation. We pitched fairly well; however we had a few issues we hadn't taken into account. Because we were pitching in a room which was fairly dull our presentation was unreadable; the black background mixed with small red text made it unusable. However we did have graphs and figures which could still be read. Also due to the fact we had altered our presentation our handouts did not match making them less than professional. We were asked to re-pitch next week with an updated presentation and more focus on our audience and less on marketing. We also had a few issues because we panicked and we mentioned issues that were not relevant to our production.

28/04/10:-
Today I spent the day removing parts of the pitch that were irrelevant. I also noted what was needed to update it to be suitable.

29/04/10:-
Today I spent updating my researching my area of the pitch; I updated the contigency plans and the industry context for our pitch.

30/04/10:-
Today as a group, because of contact issues, we started discussing a real contigency plan that would use all of our research and contacts we had already made but without the people who hadnt got back in touch. We decided as a backup we would look at "video game violence and the effects" we decided we could talk to parents and children who think that video game violence has effects on the consumer.

Week Commencing 19/4/10

19/4/10:-
Our first task of the day was narrowing down everything that would be required for our pitch. We pitched ideas backwards and forwards to pinpoint the exact focus of the documentary and what would be needed research wise to back up our ideas. We then produced a schedule for the rest of the week, this was to keep on top of our research and ideas. We then started discussing whether our idea had a clear question that we could answer in our documentary.

20/04/10:-
Today has been a big day for the development of our idea; we furthered our discussion on the documentary idea breaking down each of our ideas into pro's and con's and feasibility. Retro vs modern was too big a time period to cover, the development of the video games industry over the years is to broad. We then thought about how we should look at how the video game industry has developed through conflict; e.g sega vs nintendo, playstation vs xbox etc. However we realised to look at all the conflicts in 10 minutes would be quite hard, so we decided to settle on the PS3 vs Xbox 360 conflict; 1. because it is relevant to modern times, 2. we personally have an interest and 3. because it was something with a clear question that we could attempt to answer. I also carried on researching the video games industry, contigency plans and the method with which we can record the game footage.

21/04/10:-
Today we looked at the narrative structure of our documentary and our ideas which needed to be put forward into our documentary. We then looked at how and when we would bring each idea up throughout the documentary. We looked at how we could back up our idea; vox pops - of peoples opinions on the arguments, past conflict; sega vs nintendo. The idea of pixelated 16 bit avatars was mentioned.

22/04/10:-
During our lessons today we looked at different types of documentary and how to analyse them. One of the documentaries we looked at was called "etre et avoir" when we looked at this documentary we focused on the aesthetic style of the opening sequence. We looked at the reasoning behind why the director/producer choose to do this. We also compared this with the opening to "an inconvenient truth" again we looked look at the style of documentary and the effect of having a well known character; Al Gore throughout the documentary. After this we analysed "super size me" I noticed throughout this they put forward opinions in a style which made you think they were giving you facts.

23/04/10:-
Today I focused on my areas for the pitch; I found out a couple of different ways of recording game footage: using a dvd recorder or a capture card. I also found more background information on the PS3 and Xbox 360 for example the Xbox 360 was released a year before the Ps3 giving it a headstart on roping in costumers.

Week Commencing 12/4/10

12/04/10:-
Today we discussed the structure of documentaries - the reasoning behind us doing this was to try and find an understanding behind how and why documentaries are structured the way they are. We looked at how this could be applied to our groups idea of looking at the video game industry.

13/04/10: -
During one of our lessons we analysed "truth about food." We looked at the structure of this particular documentary and then checked how it matched with the typical documentary codes and conventions. We also discussed how all documentaries have a question which needs answering and how that is the main focus of the show. This got us as a group considering how this applied to our documentary.

14/04/10:-
Today I started researching into the video game industry; how much it is worth, the history of video games consoles and the top ranking games consoles. I also researched the recent news and jobs in the video game industry. I thought this would be useful to help put forward why this documentary is important.

15/04/10:-
Today Beth Sharp has joined our group; we started debating whether our original idea would work - due to the fact it is such a broad subject to cover in such a short amount of time. We have decided to mainly focus on how video games consoles have developed over the years. We procedded to break down the first task of the assignment brief - so we knew exactly what would be needed for our documentary.

16/04/10:-
As a group we were talking about how our documentary could be developed into something more relevant to the times. We looked at the different consoles there have been and the categories they could be broken down into to help back up our idea. We then went through our idea and broke down what needed to be done to get our documentary produced.
